Facebook turning off data access to third parties

27 Sep 2019

Facebook Inc will end access to limited friend data from Microsoft Corp and Sony Corp as a first step under a record $5 billion U.S. Federal Trade Commission settlement announced on Wednesday, the world’s largest social media company said. Facebook will restrict data access for dozens of partners who could use it to build Facebook experiences or features for their devices, the company said. The features allowed people to connect with Facebook friends while using other apps or sync their Facebook friends’ contact information with their phone. Facebook said a dozen partners were identified as continuing to access some data but only Microsoft and Sony were still accessing limited types of friends data using old code supporting “Known experiences.”
